Clear Lake Conditions

Lake level finally dipped below 1 foot, officially recorded as .95 feet.   Water temperature has dropped to the upper 40’s  to low 50’s.  Water clarity is still very good with some areas displaying water from 2 feet to 8 feet of clarity.  For all purposes, weeds are gone.

The water level is still low and you need to pay attention to rocks, pilings, and underwater debris that is coming in to play.

The Bite This Month

The absolute best bite this month, and for the most part, for the winter, is using the live bait.  I have spoken with several anglers and another guide this week and have heard of 50 to 70 fish days averaging around 3 pounds and up to 9.  The trick has been to find a large school of bait and fish underneath it.

Jim fished a tournament this weekend for us and caught over 30 fish on by cranking on the North end of the lake.  His best 5 went 17.5, but he had a blast and caught a lot of fish.

The rip bite has not really come on yet but should…soon.

Goodbye to 2007

I am so ready to wave goodbye to 2007.  The weather was terrible with too many windy days throughout the year.  The crappie were severely overfished.  Our tournament fishing was a real grind with both myself and my partner Jim having to fish some team tournaments by ourselves due to either guide trips or work.  If we had 20 pounds it took 30 pounds.  Our lake record limit for 5 fish in a tournament was broken.  One of the most anticipated fish offs we qualified to compete in occurred two weeks after my heart attack.  The low water level made it extremely tough to fish some of our better prespawn areas for live bait fishing.

The good news about 2007 is we caught more big fish, it was a big fish kind of year.  We found quite a few new areas to fish.  We had several clients break 30 pound limits.  We learned some new tricks for catching some very large fish on live bait in March and early April.  We had our best year of fishing swim baits.  I had my personal best of over 20 pounds for two fish on one cast.  I weighed in my personal best tournament fish at 11.16 this fall.  We did qualify for the two fish offs that we wanted to fish.  And the best thing of all for me is more clients caught bigger fish this year.

Thanks to all of you who made 2007 a very good year for Clear Lake Guide Service.  I will do my best to improve our service including the newsletter in 2008.  I am working very hard to get back on the water and ready for the middle of February.

I hope you enjoy the pictures attached of some of the best fish of 2007, there were a lot of good ones.
